Learning Japanese for the First Time

Japanese have been relatively a bigger part in my life in Korea. It was very easy to learn some words that sound similar to Korean, or famous lines and words from TV shows and movies. It was easy for me to learn words like "watashi" and "osuwarikudasai," words that are easily said and repeated on TV. On top of being able to learn tiny parts of the language, I was attracted to the culture as well (food taking a humongous part), which led me to naturally take interest in learning Japanese. My recent visits to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto (Arashiyama) and Okinawa wanted me to know more about Japan.

Okinawa is very famous for scuba diving and their ocean views as well as Churaumi aquarium. I visited there in the summer and saw different views that I cannot see in Korea, not even from Jeju Island. I think this constant exposure to the culture led me to finally learning the language after willing for so many years. I hope that I could learn as much to be able to express myself, ask questions and make friends the next time I visit Japan.

  1. Hi, リジーさん!I was also motivated to learn Japanese because of my trip to Japan this past summer. But I wasn't able to go to Okinawa and spent most of my time in Tokyo. In fact, both Okinawa and Jeju island are on my travel list. I couldn't speak any Japanese when I was visiting, so hopefully after this class I can actually talk to Japanese people during my next visit.

    1. こんにちは!You should totally visit both Okinawa and Jeju! both places are beautiful, and very different. Okinawa can be a little too hot during summer, but Jeju in summer is the best time of the year for visit! :)

  2. こんにちはリジーさん!That's so funny that you say you learn Japanese words from TV shows and movies because I feel that way about Korean! I watch Korean dramas with my parents (we're obsessed) and we learn words and phrases from the shows, movies, and music! Wow that's a lot of different places - which one was your favorite to visit/you would like to return to most? I visit my family in Fukui, which is around 2 hours from Kyoto! I'm excited to learn Japanese with you this year!

    1. Clareさん! I loved visiting Kyoto area, especially Arashiyama. The bamboo woods area there is beautiful, and so chill even during the hot summer of Kyoto! You should totally plan a visit to Arashiyama if Fukui isn't too far from there! (I remember that it was about 30 minutes away from Kyoto station)
